CBT for Travel Anxiety - A Testimonial

March 5, 2020 Sarah McCartney

Before I started the sessions with Sarah I was very cynical about CBT. I came to see her following a car accident where I was stationary and hit from behind. I was very surprised about how much the accident affected me in every day life.

Continuing Professional Development - Chairwork in CBT

March 1, 2020 Dave McCartney

On 25th and 26th February, Sarah attended a “Chairwork in CBT” training course hosted by the Devon and Cornwall Branch of the BABCP at the Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre.

Chairwork represents a collection of powerful experiential interventions which utilise chairs and their relative positions for therapeutic purposes. Chairwork has a rich history of applications in CBT and appears to be an effective method for treating a range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

For a more detailed description of chairwork, look at this article from the British Psychological Society.

The training was led by Tobyn Bell. Tobyn is a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, Trainer, Supervisor, and programme-lead at the Greater Manchester CBT Training Centre. He is also a Compassion-Focused Therapist and is part of the training executive for the Compassionate Mind Foundation.

CBT and EMDR for severe depression and anxiety

February 21, 2020 Sarah McCartney
DSC_0052.jpeg

I felt so, so low and didn’t want to be around. In desperation I asked a friend for help and she recommended Sarah.

I learned very quickly that I could trust Sarah. She listened to what I said, processed it and then came up with relevant strategies to help me. She never judged what I said. Her focus was on using that information to help me move forward. After the first session I walked out of the door thinking “I feel safe. I’ve got someone to help me”.

Within 8 sessions of CBT, I no longer had depression and heightened anxiety. I decided to have some EMDR sessions to process some upsetting memories. Now I just feel completely different, which is wonderful. I feel more self-confident, calmer, resilient and I can speak up for myself.

CBT for Social Phobia - Testimonial

February 18, 2020 Sarah McCartney
Jul2004_082.jpeg

Whenever I went out, I just wanted to go home. But being alone at home it felt worse and I got really down.

Due to a long term illness I got stuck in a rut. I stopped seeing friends, going out and I withdrew. I had previously been a very active person. When I recovered from my illness, to my surprise I felt anxious about going out. I had never, ever had this before.  Basically my home became my safety net and unfortunately also a prison. Whenever I went out, I just wanted to go home. But being alone at home it felt worse and I got really down.

Work provided me with 12 sessions of CBT with Sarah. I have really enjoyed the sessions with her.  Each week I have learnt something new. I have put all of this learning into practice. I have been able to challenge myself and successfully  go out socially again and meet new people. I have joined some groups which I am really enjoying. It is making my life better both socially and at work.

If it wasn’t for the CBT techniques and Sarah encouraging me in the right way, I wouldn’t be having the fun I am having now. 100% thank you Sarah. I am grateful for everything. I feel I had a good connection with her and felt comfortable  from the get go.

“I came to see Sarah because I was troubled by recurrent obsessions about death. I had these obsessions in my youth and was treated by medication. However, I never learned how to handle these intrusions. When these returned this year I was overwhelmed and sought help.”

Testimonial for the treatment of symptoms following a car accident

January 27, 2020 Sarah McCartney
IMG_3811.jpeg

I came to see Sarah because I had been involved in a car accident. I was given 12 sessions by my insurance company to treat my symptoms. I had had depression and anxiety for about 3 years before the accident but my symptoms had got worse. I also had problems with reoccurring images of the accident, nightmares, feeling really jumpy, poor concentration and disturbed sleep. I was avoiding driving and in particular down the road where the accident happened.

What I have learned in these 12 sessions has helped me not only to get over the accident but also in other aspects of my life.

Testimonial - CBT for panic attacks and long term generalised anxiety

January 23, 2020 Sarah McCartney

Since my early twenties I had experienced periods of heightened anxiety and panic attacks. The first panic attack was absolutely terrifying. I did the old head in the sand technique. From time to time I would read a self-help book or watch a self-help DVD. I found that it was one thing reading something but it was another thing putting it into practice.

From someone who was a doubter I am living proof that CBT can help someone. I no longer have panic attacks and I manage my anxiety very well. I have a different outlook on life, because I no longer worry about when am I going to be anxious again.

I was in a very bad place. I was at an all time low and had reached the point where I felt incapable of doing anything. I was lucky to have support from work who were understanding and recommended Sarah.

Within a couple of weeks of CBT I began to notice a positive change. The first technique Sarah taught me just clicked for me. It felt like a light bulb moment.

Testimonial for CBT and EMDR treatment for panic attacks whilst driving and heightened anxiety

I came to see Sarah following a severe panic attack whilst driving and finding myself in a state of constant anxiety. This heightened anxiety was not typical for me but had quietly built up over a period of approximately a year, without me fully realising. I didn’t know what to expect from CBT but Sarah put me at ease instantly and explained everything very clearly.
